Flat. Melbourne is like a pre-pubescent Sydney with it's CBD being the only high buildings. Everything else is just small and flat. It also lacks some of the more attractive old(ish - I say this because it's possible my front door in Edinburgh was older than this country) architecture.

It's a fair bit colder too. I've said goodbye to the 25 degree sunny Autumn days in Sydney and said hello to the cloudy, windy climate just 850km South South West (or South West). There are positives though.

  • Pubs: Close to the ones back home. I've really missed these. Sydney is a more flashy place with lots of bars and nightclubs and a little lacking on the pub side of things unless you're willing to go well into the suburbs. That's not to say Melbourne doesn't have the clubs but it does have cosy little Pubs that are great for spending an evening drinking a fine - or not so fine - Ale while listening to local bands.

  • Cheaper: Everything is cheaper here especially renting/housing.

  • New Office: Rooftop canteen, gym and dry cleaning services all in the building. The gym is an incredible $17 a month (about 7 pounds sterling). Have I signed up yet? Noooooooo.

  • Dry: It does rain here don't get me wrong. It's less humid. In fact it's not humid at all. I'd be kept awake most of the night in Sydney trying to unstick myself from the covers because of how humid the nights were.

I think it's going to be a great place to live but it certainly doesn't have the looks of Sydney or the good weather all year round. I'd probably even say that Sydney is the place to go on holiday. I haven't seen anything in Melbourne that's made me say 'Wow' like the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Harbour and sunshine did in Sydney.
