Getting on with the Digital Rebel

So I finally got to use the new camera over the weekend (I was way for work Sunday-Friday and the camera arrived on Monday. Do you know how annoyed I was?!). I'm fairly impressed with the first shots even though I was using the standard lens from the kit.

It's nice and heavy (and ever since watching Jurrasic Park when I was 10 I've been convinced that anything heavy is good. Thanks Donald) and it's easy to hold. Claire asked about how it holds and if it's size is a good/bad thing and honestly I think it's good. Maybe if folk went from a larger camera to this one they would have issues?

I've got a lot of reading up to do and a lot of money to spend on accessories. There's so much more I can do with this cam. Even with the standard lens I'm sure there's lots more to get. Maybe I should use take the photos in RAW format?

I'm sure that even with all the technology in the world photos might not be that great. I'm not sure if I've got an eye for the shots. Even if I don't it's still fun!

It's a whole new learning curve.

Jeez all this was random and disjointed.

I've done 8000 shots with mine without touching the RAW feature - I've never "got" the point of it.

Are there any sites you've used to pick things up and hear about good lenses/filters/etc? I'm struggling to find *good* places to find information from.

To be honest, I dont' really look at many/any websites for tips (!)

That said, some of the groups on flickr are great for that sort of thing. There are groups for nearly every type of lens / filter around; and they have various discussions with useful hints, techniques etc. May be a good place to start

First shots, eh? Well, I have to agree with Daz - very impressive!

I agree with your take on the size/weight thing and I think that after my beast (and the D70s is a bit of a beast), I would probably find the Rebel a bit awkward - especially at first.

If you've ever got any spare time on your hands, I thoroughly recommend T189 with the OU, it really gives a solid technical grounding of the basics and you pick up some invaluable tips/advice from fellow pro-sumer students.

@Claire: The Nikons do look a bit bigger. I've seen some people walking around with some big beasts. Personally I'd rather have it smaller.

Re. OU - unfortuntely I can't do any OU courses being away over here, but Oz have an open uni too and they might have something similar.

Dave, (RE: OU) that's not strictly true - the OU does offer a number of courses to "overseas" students. Check out: www3.open.ac.uk/courses/countries/Australia.shtm

T189 is definitely on that list

Yeah, I've just finished the debut presentation of it, so no doubt they'll alter the odd thing or two based on feedback (as they often do with *new* courses).

I can honestly say that in the 4 years I've been with the OU, T189 has been the course that I not only enjoyed the most, but the course where I've learnt the most too. You get as much out of it as you put in as it revolves around giving and getting feedback from fellow students. Even now, my group are still participating together and giving feedback in our T189 Flickr group. I wish there was a level 2 version to go onto afterwards, I'd sign up in a heartbeat, I really miss it.

You know, that lesson from Jurassic Park has been with me my entire life too. Whenever I don't know much about a product, I'll pick up a few of them and then just buy the heaviest.
